Taproot Fibre Lab / Hackling Machine

We are currently in the testing phase.

The scutched fibre is hackled using two counter rotating belts with 8″ hackles fastened in rows. The hackles increase in density beginning with 0.75 pins per inch (PPI) and ending at 40 PPI. The hackle combs straighten and further clean and separate the fibre bundles to allow for the highest quality thread.

THE FLAX TO FIBRE PROCESS

Stage 1: Rippling
Removing the seed boll from the flax stem.

Stage 2: Breaking
The first step in separating the  fibre from the straw. The outer woody stem is crushed and bent in preparation for scutching.

Stage 3: Scutching
The broken and crushed woody “shive” is separated from the fibre.

Stage 4: Hackling
The fibre is combed smooth and straight while the shorter and lower quality fibre (tow) is separated.

Stage 5: Intersecting
The fibre is drawn out into a continuous ribbon called a “sliver.”

Stage 6: Spinning
The sliver is further drawn out and twisted into a yarn.
